We are pleased to announce the organization of a new scientific event for young researchers -doctoral, post-doctoral fellows- in crystallography, all sciences combined, which will take place from September 26 to 29, 2023 in Strasbourg.
The objectives of the YCM1 are to gather young crystallographers in a transnational and international context, to create opportunities for scientific exchange, and to provide networking opportunities with industry with a specific focus on the training and career development of the young scientist participants. The YCM1 is supported by the German and French crystallographic societies (DGK and AFC) and the French-German University (UFA/DFH).
It is also an integral part of the activities of the Franco-German doctoral college « Integrative Biophysics and Structural biology for the Study of Infection and Disease » CDFA IB-ID, which since 2022 has brought together PhD students from the universities of Hamburg and Strasbourg. Crystallography is one of the main methods of investigation in IB-ID and it seems vital to us to maintain the level of expertise of our PhD students in this field.
Crystallography is a multi- and trans-disciplinary discipline which allows us to probe matter at fine detail in order to describe the properties of inorganic, organic or biological molecules at the atomic scale. It is an essential method in biology, chemistry, physics, and heritage sciences and has accompanied many major advances since its birth in the early 20th century. It remains more than ever relevant, especially in the fight against SARS-CoV2 (a plenary talk is planned on this topic).

The YCM1 will emphasize this multidisciplinarity by mixing the different biological, chemical, physical and heritage science themes in sessions gathering all participants. Speakers will therefore be invited to make an effort to make their work broadly accessible, a very interesting and formative exercise, in order to be understood by non-specialists, while illustrating the contribution of crystallography in their research work. The major part of the meetingwill be dedicated to oral and poster presentations from submitted abstracts in order to offer each participant the opportunity to valorize her/his research in an international context.
